Calif. City Targets Mobile Carwash Runoff

04/10/2009

Mobile carwash operators in Oxnard, Calif., will soon have to capture and recycle water runoff or dispose of wastewater at an approved facility, according to a report in the Ventura County Star. City officials recently approved the rules in an effort to comply with state and federal regulations regarding storm water discharge.

According to an official with California’s Regional Water Quality Control Board, the city risked fines of up to $10,000 per day if it did not regulate “non-point sources of pollution,” which also include runoff from gas stations, parking lots and freeways, the article said.

Although many mobile carwash operators offer “waterless” wash and detail services or use biodegradable chemical products that do not contain volatile organic compounds, officials said the issue has to do with what is washed off of vehicles, such as oil, road grime and brake dust, and not necessarily what is used during the wash process.
