Sam’s Club to Feature Energy-efficient Carwash

07/03/2009

A new Sam’s Club in Springfield, Mo., will be energy efficient, including its carwash, according to a company press release. Grand opening festivities are scheduled for July 23.

The primary building features 191 skylights and a system that dims light fixtures as natural light brightens, according to a report by the Springfield News-Leader. Sam’s Club officials estimate the daylight-harvesting skylights will reduce the amount of energy required to light the store by up to 75 percent per day. The facility will occupy 134,608 square feet.

The carwash will be located adjacent to the facility’s fueling station, and its lighting will be equipped with induction fixtures that reduce lighting energy consumption by more than 50 percent compared to standard fixtures, the company said.

“Sam’s Club is committed to the environment, we are doing all we can to reduce energy and water consumption and minimize waste,” said Manager Jordan Adkins in a released statement. “Our cleaning products used during a carwash are non-toxic and free from harmful substances, and we recycle all of our cleaning product containers.”

In addition, special drains in the auto service area will remove oil before water is released into sewers, the News-Leader reported.
