Chrysler Recalls 1.6 Million Jeeps
02/18/2002
DETROIT -- The Chrysler arm of DaimlerChrysler AG said last week it would recall about 1.6 million Jeep Grand Cherokee sport utility vehicles to fix what owners claimed was a propensity for the vehicles to roll backward even though their transmissions were in the "park'' setting. Chrysler said it had found no defect in its investigation, which linked the problem to 59 injuries, but said it would conduct a recall anyway to close a federal inquiry and resolve customer concerns. The recall covers 1993 through 1998 model year Grand Cherokees. Chrysler said it would install a device on the floor shifter to help ensure the vehicles' transmissions were firmly placed in park. Chrysler also advised customers to ensure their vehicles were in park, including removing the key from the ignition when leaving the vehicle. Source: Reuters
