ICA Aids In Passage of $1 Coin Act

01/06/2006

CHICAGO -- The International Carwash Association (ICA) recently announced the passage of the Presidential $1 Coin Act. According to the ICA, President Bush recently authorized the U.S. Mint to start production on a new $1 golden coin featuring all 37 deceased presidents, which will enter into circulation in 2007.

The ICA says the association was integral in the effort to pass the bill, as well as include a stipulation that ensures an adequate supply of $1 coins will be available for commerce. This is welcome news for carwash operators, who the association ensured were specifically mentioned in the bill. The Sacagawea golden coins, introduced in 2000, also will remain in circulation.

"From our industry’s perspective, the most significant piece of this legislation is the provision that the Treasury Department must provide uncontaminated supplies of the new golden dollars," says ICA Executive Director Mark Thorsby. "The mixing of Susan B. Anthony dollar coins with the Sacagawea golden dollars has been a major source of headaches for self-service carwash operators. We have supported this new legislation solely as a means to get the Treasury Department to deal with the contamination issue."

Each year, four new presidents will appear on the coin in chronological order.
