Thieves Steal Car From Carwash
09/29/2006
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Thieves stole a woman's car from a carwash, and she says car wash employees are to blame. The theft happened at the Mr. Pride Car Wash on Poplar Avenue in East Memphis. Two men hanging out on benches outside the business stole the car from the parking lot as workers and the victim watched. Cheryl Colletta has used the Mr. Pride Car Wash on Poplar Avenue for years, but when she went to get her car washed on Sept. 15, she became the victim of a down and dirty crime. She is now driving a rental car because her car was stolen from a carwash. Colletta says workers at Mr. Pride were finishing up work on her car when two thieves jumped in it and took off. She said, "I was shocked. I was screaming about my car." Colletta blames Mr. Pride employees for the theft because they left her car doors open and the keys in her car. She said, "I just believe they need to change their policy of leaving the keys in the vehicle with the door open while they're drying it." Mr. Pride manager Lewis Jones said the company has changed their policy since Colletta's car theft. Jones says, "Now, we just put 'em (the keys) in our pockets. We've never had anybody come on the lot and steal a car like that." But just a few minutes after Jones said that, two customers in their parking lot told us their keys had been left in their car. Colleta said her car theft forced her to change her home's locks. There's been no sign of her old car so she must buy a new one which is why Colletta says Mr. Pride employees should be ashamed their policy put her car and her safety in jeopardy. She said, "I think they were completely responsible because of that for the theft of my car."
