Steven M. Roberts, president of Roberts & Co. Inc., which owns and operates the Golden Nozzle Car Wash in Easthampton, Mass., where an employee nearly strangled Sunday, is working with federal investigators to determine the cause of the accident, according to a report in The Republican.
Attendant Stephanie Carpluk lost consciousness when her scarf tangled with a spinning scrubber brush. A customer, John O’Leary, cut her free with a pocket knife and revived her with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Roberts described the incident as a “freak accident” and told the newspaper that the company’s safety program covers appropriate dress in the workplace. He also said there are walk areas within the wash tunnel that are a safe distance from the equipment.
Roberts & Co. owns 70 retail operations and 22 carwashes in New England, according to the report.
“We have never had an incident close to this,” Roberts told The Republican. “In 35 years we have probably washed 15 million cars.”
Carpluk sustained severe bruising to her neck and under her eyes. She has been released from the hospital and is recuperating at home, the newspaper reported.
