Participating carwashes performed more than 58,500 free carwashes for active and retired military service personnel Nov. 11 during the national Grace for Vets carwash event, according to preliminary figures posted on the Grace for Vets Web site. The final total could be much higher, with several large carwash chains yet to report their totals, organizers said.
More than 500 carwash locations representing approximately 250 carwash companies in 44 states and Washington, D.C., took part in the annual Veteran’s Day celebration.
Started in 2004 by Cloister Wash & Lube, Grace for Vets has grown into a national celebration, with hundreds of carwashes participating each year.
In order to receive a free carwash at a participating location, all veterans had to do was verbally tell a carwash attendant that they were a retired veteran or active in the armed forces. No proof was required because program officials wanted the event to run under one of the military’s guiding principles, honor.
