The West 10 Car Wash and Detail Center in Succasunna, N.J., recently installed 50 solar panels on its roof and expects the system to generate enough power to run the carwash facility, according to a report by the Daily Record. Owners Bo and Irene Ferenc invested about $80,000 in the project and expect to save $20,000 per year after federal and state rebates.
In addition, if the system generates more electricity than the carwash needs during sunny days, the Ferencs can sell the excess back to the Jersey Central Power & Light Co. in the form of rebates and then draw on those during the winter or when weather impedes the effectiveness of the solar panels, the article said.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony in celebration of the solar panel project is scheduled for Nov. 21.
The Ferencs have run the carwash for 20 years and told the newspaper that improvements to solar technology, as well as the environmental and financial benefits, made the timing right to add the solar panels. The couple said the carwash also was among the first in the area to add a water recycling system.
