General Motors and Procter & Gamble were among several major companies yesterday that pledged aid for earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. GM made an immediate $100,000 contribution to the American Red Cross relief fund through its General Motors Foundation, and P&G is determining how much of its PUR Purifier of Water product will need to be delivered to ensure safe drinking water, according to a report by Marketing Daily.

“As one of the world’s largest car companies, doing our part to contribute aid to Haiti is not about business but our obligation to our fellow man,” said Ed Whitacre, GM chairman and CEO. “There is remarkable compassion among GM employees, and I know that same spirit will make a difference in helping the Haiti relief effort.”

The magnitude 7.0 quake struck Haiti on Tuesday causing widespread devastation. Some government officials fear the death toll could be in the tens of thousands. Some estimates speculate that 3 million people, about one-third of the nation’s population, were affected.

President Obama today ordered $100 million in immediate U.S. aid, as well as military support.

In its relief efforts, Procter & Gamble is working with several organizations, including CARE, Population Services International, World Vision, UNICEF, Samaritan's Purse and Global Medic, Marketing Daily reported.

Among other companies stepping forward yesterday was Coca-Cola, which pledged $1 million through the Coca-Cola Foundation. ConAgra and TD Bank both donated $100,000 to the Red Cross, Marketing Daily reported.
