JetStream Automatic Carwash in Jamestown, N.D., lost nearly 2,000 gallons of gasoline last month when the fuel leaked from underground piping, according to a report by The Jamestown Sun. Operator Ray Mering said he noticed the problem during routine checks of the gas station’s fuel levels, which did not coincide properly with the amount of gas being pumped by customers.
No injuries were reported, but an investigation is underway to determine if there is any environmental damage. Mering hired an environmental consulting firm to determine how far the gasoline spread underground. Because gasoline is less dense than water, it can float on top of groundwater. The spilled fuel can be cleaned up using a series of pumps, the article said.
A spokesperson for the North Dakota Department of Health told the newspaper an inspection is scheduled for March 15.
The estimated value of the lost fuel was nearly $5,500.
